Cytotechnology Program


Eligibility and Requirements

To be considered for admission into KU's cytotechnology program, the following are required:
  1. Prerequisite Courses
    Prior to entering the program students must complete three (3) years of undergraduate college course work including a total of 90 semester credit hours. Twenty (20) semester hours must be in the biological sciences. Also required are eight (8) hours of chemistry and three (3) hours of college algebra. Please see the complete list of prerequisite courses for details.

  2. Grade Point Average
    An overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.3 (on a 4.0 scale) is required to be eligible to apply. In addition, student transcripts must document an individual course grade of no less than "C" on each biology, chemistry, and math prerequisite course.

  3. Health and Physical Requirements
    Good physical and mental health are essential to the field of cytotechnology. Physical or other disabilities are evaluated on a case by case basis by the program and by the Equal Employment Opportunity Office at KUMC. Please review the program's technical standards for details. Physical examinations are required prior to the time of registration for classes at KUMC. A test for color blindness is also required.

  4. Background Check
    The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requires all incoming students to pay for a background check. This one-time fee must be paid directly to the company performing the background investigation. You will be asked to provide information and make the payment once you have been officially accepted into the program.   5. Other Requirements: International Students
    You are considered an international student if you require a visa, or currently reside in the U.S. with non-immigrant status, or currently residing in the U.S. and applying for permanent resident. International students must meet additional requirements for admission.

    If English is a second language, applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and arrange for scores to be sent directly to the KU Cytotechnology program. A satisfactory score on the TOEFL must be obtained within the previous two (2) years. Please review the English Language Requirements for more information.
