STEP 1 - Contact agencies or people required to send information directly to the KU Health Information program.
- Arrange to have one official copy of transcripts from each college and university that you have
attended sent directly to the department.
Any transcript not from an accredited U.S. college or university must also be evaluated by the KUMC Office of International Studies before acceptance to the program.
- Contact three (3) different individuals who can provide a professional recommendation on your behalf. One reference must be provided by an instructor or professor of a course you have taken, and one needs to be from a current or former manager/supervisor from past employment or volunteer work. The third reference may be anyone the student feels can best express his/her abilities to the department. The recommendations may not be obtained from family members. Letters are also acceptable.
Print three recommendation forms from the application packet. The completed, signed forms must be returned directly to the KU Department of Health Information Management from the person making the recommendation.
STEP 2 - Complete all required application forms and documentation and mail in one package to the health information management admissions coordinator.
Use the application packet to the right. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to open and print the documents. Once the application materials have been received, the prospective student will be notified to schedule an interview with the department faculty. Download it free from Adobe's Web site.
Once all application materials are received, students will be called to schedule an interview with HIM faculty.
Upon acceptance into the program, students will be sent an enrollment packet consisting of background check instructions and information about computer requirements. All HIM students are required to possess a laptop or table PC which meets the minimum hardware and software requirements at KUMC. Students are responsible for having the laptop or table PC in class in order to access course notes and take exams.
International Students
You are considered an international student if you require a visa, or are currently reside in the U.S. with non-immigrant status, or currently residing in the U.S. and applying for permanent resident. International students may be required to provide additional admission documentation, test scores and/or course work evaluation.
If English is a second language, applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and arrange for scores to be sent directly to the KU health information management program. A satisfactory score on the TOEFL must be obtained within the previous two (2) years.
