How does the RHIT-Progression Program work?
Although online courses offer flexibility, this is not a self-paced correspondence course. The online courses are offered at the same time as the traditional courses with the same assignments, tests, expectations and timeframes. Courses are offered through an online course delivery system, which you access through the internet. You also need to have the following software, which may be purchased through myKUMC portal: MS Office Professional 2007 & Visio Standard 2007.
Along with the online courses, you will be required to complete up to two Professional Practice Experiences and a Management Internship or Capstone Project such as a Senior Thesis. [top]
Is on-line learning as effective as traditional learning?
Yes. The difference between the two is that online learning is an asynchronous form of education. It does not depend upon time or place. The online student must be self-disciplined and self-motivated in order to complete courses. The content of the course is the same & the expectations are the same. An online course requires a high level of motivation and participation. [top]
What resources will I have?
Aside from your ANGEL access, you will be given a KUMC email account. You will also have online access to Dykes Library and the KUMC Bookstore. Textbooks may be ordered directly from the KUMC Bookstore & delivered to you. Your main point of contact will be the Distance Education Coordinator at the HIM Program. [top]
How many hours do I need to graduate?
A minimum of 124 academic credit hours are required to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Kansas. You need to enter the program with approximately 63 hours of required prerequisites and electives & the remaining HIA coursework is completed online. Credit for the HIM courses is earned through a combination of HIM course work, portfolio credit and challenge exams. [top]
What are the costs involved?
Expenses for the program include: Application Fee: $60.00; In-state tuition rate with an additional $50 e-learning fee per credit hour (subject to change without notice by the Kansas Board of Regents); Processing fees for Portfolio Credit posting; Software expenses for course assignments/projects. [top]
How long is a student allowed to stay in the RHIT-Progression Program?
The program may be completed in either 2 years (full-time) or 4 years (part-time), but no more than 5 years. [top]
What is the application deadline for the RHIT-Progression Program?
Application to the program is each fall. All parts of the application must be completed within six weeks prior to the start date of the fall semester. [top]
I already have a laptop. Can I use that?
All students are required to have the same Tablet PC with the same software and they must be purchased through the school. [top]
Is there on-campus housing?
No, but there are apartments and homes near the KUMC campus. [top]
Do all the application materials need to be sent in together?
No, we understand that reference letters and transcripts will arrive individually. The other materials may be sent in together. [top]
Do I need to get the background check done when applying to the program?
No, but you will need to get it done once you are accepted into the program. [top]
Can I take a combined Anatomy & Physiology course?
Yes, the listed prerequisites are KU course numbers and KU does not offer a combined A&P course. [top]
Will my financial aid transfer over from KU to KUMC?
No, it does not transfer from KU to KUMC. Contact the KUMC Office of Student Financial Aid at 913-588-5170 or visit their website at www.kumc.edu/studentcenter/financialaid.html [top]
Do I need to have completed all the required prerequisites before I apply?
You may still be enrolled in some prerequisite course work at the time of admission and that’s fine. If you see that you will not be able to complete the prerequisites before the beginning of the fall semester, then you must submit a plan for completing any missing prerequisite course work.
Note: you may send unofficial copies of your transcripts for evaluation to our Student Advisor at anytime.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in another field and now I want to get into Health Information Management. What do I have to do to reach this career goal?
First you need to decide whether you want to pursue another Bachelor’s degree, an Associate’s degree, or build on your education with a Master’s degree. You may want to visit our national association’s website, AHIMA (http://www.ahima.org) to explore your options. Note, a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in HIM will allow you to sit for the RHIA exam and an Associate’s degree in HIT will allow you to sit for the RHIT exam. A list of accredited programs may be found on CAHIIM’s website (http://www.cahiim.org).
I already have a degree from a non-U.S. university and I want to seek admission to the HIM program at KU. What steps do I need to take?
All non-U.S. transcripts must be evaluated by the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. Contact their department at 785-864-2616 or visit their website at http://www2.ku.edu/~issfacts.
Can I work while in the program?
Yes, we encourage students to try to obtain employment in the HIM field. Since the course loads are somewhat heavy, we advise students to only work part-time approximately 20 hours a week.
Is there any housing available on-campus?
There is no student housing on the KUMC campus. Most students live in apartments in surrounding neighborhoods and are responsible for arranging their own housing. KUMC housing ads are posted on this website: http://www2.kumc.edu/classifieds/housingads.
What sorts of Student Services are available?
Student service departments include: the Registrar's Office, Student Health Services, Student Counseling and Educational Support Services, Student Financial Aid, Student Resources, Wellness, and Diversity, Kirmayer Fitness Center, and the Student Administration System.
Where should I park when visiting the H.I.M. Department?
You may park in either parking garage - just be sure to bring in your parking ticket so it may be validated. Both parking garages are several building aways from the H.I.M. offices, which are located in Taylor Building. The only public access available without a security card is found by entering the School of Nursing building (first floor) and continuing to Taylor building's elevator (note: upon entering Taylor, the current floor becomes "2"). Use the elevator to drop to the first floor H.I.M. offices.
I need driving directions to KUMC.
