Applications

Deadline to apply to KU's Nuclear Medicine Technology program is February 1 each year.

Students enter the program in September.

Transfer Students

Due to the twelve-month intense training period, we do not accept advanced placement, part-time or transfer students.

To be considered for admission into KU's Nuclear Medicine program, the following are required:

  1. Degree/Academic Requirements
    Applicants must currently be one of the following registered professionals. Credentials or transcripts not from an accredited U.S. academic institution will require evaluation by the KU International Student Services Office before they will be accepted for eligibility.

    • Registered Radiology Technologist (ARRT)*
    • Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS)*
    • Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS)*
    • Certified Medical Technologist
    • Registered Nurse
    • Associates Degree in a medical imaging profession with current registry or licensure
    • Bachelor’s Degree in an allied health or health science Field (ie, Biology or Chemistry)

      * applicant may be a registry candidate but will be required to pass the registry before entrance into the program.

  2. Prerequisite Courses
    The following courses must be completed to be eligible for the Nuclear Medicine program. *For the 2010-2011 school year only, an exception may be granted for courses marked with (*) if sufficient credit has been earned in an accredited medical imaging program. Beginning with the 2011 program, all of the listed courses will be required with no exceptions.

    Chemistry with Lab
    General Physics*

    Humanities Course*
    Social Sciences Course*
    Human Anatomy & Physiology
    Human Anatomy/Physiology Lab*
    Oral or Written Communication

  3. Grade Point Average
    An overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) is required to be eligible to apply. In addition, student transcripts must document an individual course grade of no less than "C" on each prerequisite course (above).

  4. Health and Physical Requirements
    Good physical and mental health are essential to the field of nuclear medicine. Specifically, excellent visual acuity is necessary. The Nuclear Medicine Student must also have manual dexterity, sufficient hearing and speech, and good physical coordination in positioning patients and operating nuclear medicine equipment.  Students must have full utility of both arms, hands and fingers in order to perform examinations and operate equipment. The ability to handle extremely heavy objects is required.

  5. Background Check
    The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requires all incoming students to pay for a background check. This one-time fee must be paid directly to the company performing the background investigation. You will be asked to provide information and make the payment once you have been officially accepted into the program.   6. Other Requirements: International Students
    You are considered an international student if you require a visa, or currently reside in the U.S. with non-immigrant status, or currently reside in the U.S. and are applying for permanent resident. International students must meet additional requirements for admission, and will be required to provide documentation of residency and citizenship status.

    If English is a second language, applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), and arrange for scores to be sent directly to KU. Additionally, a minimum score of 50 on the TSE (Test of Spoken English) is required. Satisfactory scores on the TOEFL and TSE must obtained within the previous two (2) years.
