Influenza Updates and Information

Feb. 23: The 2009 H1N1 flu virus will be included in the next seasonal flu vaccine when it becomes available next fall, health experts decided Monday. This plan follows the recommendations of the World Health Organization. More info.

Dec. 18: U.S. government officials announce the nation’s supply of H1N1 vaccine is now at sufficient quantity for everyone, not just those at highest risk, to get protected. KUMC has not announced the availability of H1N1 vaccine at Student Health Services as this time.

Nov. 9: Student Health Services continues to give H1N1 vaccine for students who are doing clinicals and seasonal flu vaccine to all students during walk-in immunization clinics (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am to 1 pm). Very limited numbers of seasonal flu vaccine remain and KUMC will not be receiving any additional seasonal flu vaccine this year.

If you get sick:

1. Please stay home if you experience symptoms as described on the Student Health Web site. If you have symptoms of an influenza-type illness, please isolate yourself until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without using fever-reducing medications). In addition, before returning students should not have aching, chills, sore throat, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Keep in mind it is possible to be highly contaigous even without a fever and some reports indicate patients may experience little or no fever even though they do have the flu. Use common sense and if you do not feel well please stay home regardless if you meet the common symptoms of H1N1 or not.

Absentee notes from Student Health will not be given during this flu period.

2. Notify the faculty members for every class in which you are enrolled by either calling or emailing them.

3. If a student in one of the high risk categories or a protected group has been exposured during an activity directly related to their schooling and would like to be considered for treatment, they should call Stephanie Jernigan (913-588-1941). There are only limited, specific reasons why the prescriptions will be written and if granted the drug will be covered under the student insurance plan.

How will I get information about H1N1 and
my classes?

  • School of Allied Health Web site
Updates and important bulletins will be placed prominently on the school's homepage as soon as information is made available to the Dean's Office.

  • Social Media
Updates will be posted as they become available to the school's Facebook page. A Facebook account is not required to view the Facebook information; however, students must become a "fan" of the school's page in order to receive updated messages via "feeds". A personal Facebook profile is required to become a fan.

  • Course-specific announcements
Check the announcement pages of your Angel course sites on a regular basis. Faculty will post any announcements about particular courses to their individual course Angel sites. Arrangements are still being made for courses not in Angel so that instructors may quickly communicate as needed. Please check email for details soon.

  • Email
Broadcast emails will be sent as needed to all SAH students' @kumc.edu accounts. Please check your kumc.edu email at least once a day!

  • Text Messages
KUMC has the capability to broadcast texts to the entire campus of users who have opted in to receive these emergency messages, not to individual schools, groups or classes. At this time we do not anticipate using texting for school- or class-specific announcements due to the system limitations. Should a flu-related emergency affect everyone at KUMC, then you would receive a text if you signed up to receive emergency texts. Sign up at Enroll and Pay.

Students who previously have signed up for text alerts on Lawrence campus need to make sure they sign-in to Enroll and Pay as a KUMC student using their KUMC login to receive alerts for the Medical Center.
