Preparing Diverse Healthcare Leaders for the Future
The Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP), including both KU and KUMC, is a special and unique opportunity for academically well-prepared undergraduate MSP programstudents. The KUMC MSP programs in Allied Health and Nursing work closely with the KU-Lawrence MSP programs.

As an MSP scholar, you join a community of students and academic professionals, including administrators and professors whose goal it is to facilitate your academic and career success. As an MSP scholar you may also be eligible to receive a scholarship.

Timeframe for Pre-Allied Health & Pre-Nursing Students
Students apply for the KUMC Multicultural Scholars Programs in Pre-Allied Health and Pre-Nursing after at least 12-36 credit hours are completed (usually spring of the freshman year). The MSP facilitates the experiences outlined below and provides a $500 scholarship per academic semester up to the completion of the prerequisite credit hours or an admission decision is made, provided that the student meets ongoing expectations of the program in terms of academic achievement and program participation.

While the program would continue to support students should they be offered admission to a KU allied health or nursing major, MSP scholars are not guaranteed admission to their chosen program. Admission to allied health and nursing majors is competitive.

Eligibility
The KUMC Multicultural Scholars Program is open to undergraduate pre-allied health (including: clinical laboratory science, cytotechnology, respiratory care, health information management, occupational therapy) and pre-nursing students who represent underrepresented groups at KU (e.g., African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Indigenous students, first-generation college students, or students with high financial need as defined by Pell Grant eligibility). Applicants must have 12-36 semester credits and a minimum GPA of 3.0. All students in our program must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Students must be committed to rigorous academic work and be willing to be engaged in a variety of activities that are designed to not only support their academic aspirations but develop other aspects of their undergraduate experience. Applicants must either be U.S. citizens or have been granted U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident status.

Applicants must submit:
  • A brief cover letter
  • A completed application
  • A college transcript or KU ARTS Form
  • Names, addresses, and phone numbers of two teachers as references
  • A two-page essay
  • Financial aid information, if applicable
Multicultural Scholars are expected to:
  • Attend all class meetings for all classes
  • Attend all monthly group meetings
  • Meet individually with the Program Director on a regular basis
  • Meet with the Program Director before making any changes in enrollment
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 each semester
  • Fulfill other obligations as specified in the program agreement.

Acceptance of Agreement
Students are required to acknowledge they will adhere to the guidelines and high expectations that your specific MSP has established. It also verifies that you clearly understand that the academic component is only a part of the overall emphasis of the program to your success. There is a social and professional leadership emphasis which is also integral to your personal growth.

Finally, this agreement confirms recipients understand they will be expected to demonstrate what it means to be a role model and leader in your professional field of study. You are expected to conduct yourself with the utmost respect for others as a member of the KU-MSP. In essence, you have a role and responsibility to make every effort to fulfill your obligation to be the best student possible.
